Overview

Time: Two Weeks (2007)
Team: Heather Chiang / Christine Poh / Aleksandra Skibicki

Milan is one of the centers of design in the world. The Salone del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair) is the world's largest design show and takes over the whole city. The goal for the Moving (in the) City project was to design a system for people that would enhance and influence how they experienced their visit to the Salone and also how they moved throughout the city of Milan. It had to incorporate interaction design that used technical as well as human-centered means.

Process

Within a two week timeframe, our project team conducted research about the Salone, identified our target audience, and gained inspiration from design precedents. We produced illustrated prototypes of our design ideas and a journey framework.

Result

A system for the Salone event that enhanced experience and movement throughout Milan. Our design provided meaningful ways to connect people to the city, event and to each other by providing installations and tools to help people share, recall and keep experiences. It included a dynamic social and spatial installation, wearable navigation tools, personalized keepsakes, and a unique Vespa incorporation. It also includes souvenirs that visitors can use and take home with them. Personalization is provided with the map scarf that makes it more meaningful and personal which gives more purpose to keep and use and display rather than throw away.

This is the ever changing hubs that people can help create, view and contribute content and structure. As content is added, the hub honeycombs take shape through content. The user content adds value and meaning to the event as it is created by the events and the cities people.
